UNITED NATIONS, May 26 (WSH) — Diplomats, United Nations officials, youth leaders, academics, business representatives and members of the African diaspora gathered at United Nations Headquarters on Tuesday to commemorate Africa Day 2026, highlighting the importance of sustainable development, youth leadership, gender equality, and international partnerships in advancing Africa’s future.

The event, convened by the African Renaissance and Diaspora Network (ARDN) and co-sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Sierra Leone to the United Nations, the African Union Observer Mission, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), focused on the African Union’s 2026 theme: “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.”

Opening the event, Dr. Djibril Diallo, President and CEO of ARDN and former spokesperson for the President of the United Nations General Assembly, emphasized that access to water and sanitation remains central to health, education, food security, gender equality, economic opportunity, and human dignity across Africa. He called for stronger partnerships among governments, businesses, civil society, youth organizations, and international institutions to address these challenges.

“Africa’s future will be shaped not only by what the continent does, but also by the partnerships it develops around the world,” Diallo said.

A recurring theme throughout the event was the role of young people as drivers of innovation and development. Speakers highlighted the upcoming Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, the first Olympic event ever to be hosted on African soil, as an opportunity to showcase Africa’s youth leadership, creativity and global engagement.

Representatives from governments, international organizations and academic institutions stressed that Africa’s young population represents one of the continent’s greatest assets. They urged greater investment in education, entrepreneurship, digital transformation, skills development and sports as pathways to sustainable growth and social progress.

The commemoration also featured the Red Card Campaign, an initiative led by ARDN that uses sports and culture to combat violence and discrimination against women and girls. Participants joined in a symbolic red-card pledge calling for an end to gender-based violence and promoting positive masculinity and social inclusion.

Global City Connect (GCC), represented through a recorded message from founder and Executive Chairman Martin Wang, highlighted growing cooperation between China and Africa. Wang noted that GCC has established city hubs in multiple countries and is expanding its Africa cooperation network under the leadership of Dr. Diallo, who serves as Chairman of GCC Africa City Hubs.

In his remarks, Wang said Chinese enterprises are increasingly interested in long-term partnerships across Africa in areas including renewable energy, smart infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare, industrial development, digital trade and transportation. He emphasized that successful international cooperation should be based on trust and sustainable partnerships rather than short-term commercial gains.

Li Nan, Secretary-General of the China Brand Innovation and Development Project and Director of GCC’s Branding Department, said that China-Africa cooperation is entering a new stage driven by innovation, industrial collaboration, and sustainable development. He noted that an increasing number of Chinese companies are looking to expand internationally and view Africa as one of the world’s most promising growth markets. He expressed hope that GCC’s global City Hub network will help connect Chinese enterprises with African partners and create more opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation.

The event also featured statements from representatives of Sierra Leone, the Philippines, the African Union, higher education institutions, youth organizations, and civil society groups. Discussions addressed issues ranging from climate resilience and water security to youth empowerment, technology, artificial intelligence, sports diplomacy and diaspora engagement.

Participants concluded the commemoration by reaffirming their commitment to Agenda 2063, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and stronger cooperation among governments, international organizations, businesses, and communities to build a more prosperous, inclusive and sustainable future for Africa.

The Africa Day observance was broadcast globally through UN Web TV, allowing participation from audiences around the world.
