UNITED NATIONS, September 19 (WSH) — On the eve of the United Nations General Assembly’s high-level week, Secretary-General António Guterres delivered a stark warning: wars, climate change, inequality, and unchecked technologies are converging into a “global crisis” that demands urgent, coordinated action.
“We are facing a global crisis. Conflicts are multiplying as geopolitical divides block effective solutions,” Guterres told UN News in an interview with Global Communications chief Melissa Fleming. He cautioned against a “sense of impunity” among nations and highlighted the crushing debt burdens of developing countries.
Call for Cooperation
The Secretary-General underscored the need for commitments on cutting carbon emissions, reforming the international financial system, and strengthening multilateralism. He warned that the 1.5°C climate target is slipping out of reach and stressed that governance of new technologies like AI must ensure they remain “a force for good.”
Peace and Security Priorities
Guterres emphasized urgent action on Gaza, calling for an immediate ceasefire and the release of all hostages, while also drawing attention to Sudan and other “forgotten conflicts.” He urged Security Council unity to prevent further suffering.
Climate Action
On climate, Guterres insisted every Member State submit new national plans with steep emissions cuts to avert irreversible catastrophe, noting the disproportionate risks facing small island States and Africa.
Determined, Not Despairing
Rejecting pessimism, Guterres declared: “I am not optimistic nor pessimistic. I am determined. We must build hope and never give up until our objectives are achieved.”
