BEIJING, March 7 (WSH) — China will stand firm on the right side of history and provide stability in a turbulent world, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Friday, warning against unilateralism and power politics while reaffirming China’s commitment to multilateralism, fairness, and justice.
Addressing a press conference on the sidelines of the third session of the 14th National People’s Congress in Beijing, Wang emphasized that “the mission of China’s diplomacy remains unchanged” despite global challenges. “We will, along with other countries, continue to uphold what is right, steer the direction of our era, defend international fairness and justice, and safeguard world peace and stability.”
Major powers and their responsibilities
A major country should “honor its international obligations and fulfill its due responsibilities”, Wang said, stressing that a real winner is the one that keeps in mind the interests of all. He reaffirmed China’s vision for a community with a shared future for humanity, where global cooperation prevails over confrontation.
On China-U.S. relations, Wang underscored mutual respect as a prerequisite, urging both nations to seek peaceful coexistence. “Given the extensive common interests and broad space for cooperation, it is fully possible for China and the United States to become partners helping each other succeed and prosper together,” he said.
Responding to Washington’s move to impose additional tariffs on Chinese goods using the fentanyl issue as a pretext, Wang said China would “definitely take countermeasures” against arbitrary pressure. He urged the United States to reassess its trade policies, questioning whether its trade deficit has widened or narrowed, whether its manufacturing has become more or less competitive, whether its inflation has gone up or down, and whether the lives of its people have become better or worse.
On China-Russia relations, Wang noted that the two countries have found a path of “non-alliance, non-confrontation and not targeting any third party”, calling it “a pioneering effort in forging a new model of major-country relations.”
Regarding China-EU relations, Wang emphasized that “China remains confident in Europe and believes Europe can be our trustworthy partner”, saying both sides have the wisdom to properly resolve pending issues through friendly consultation and jointly usher in another promising 50 years.
Pushing for global peace
Wang reiterated China’s support for diplomatic efforts to resolve conflicts, saying “no one wins in a conflict, but everyone gains in peace.”
On the Ukraine crisis, he affirmed China’s readiness to work with the international community to play a constructive role in resolving the crisis and realizing lasting peace, while respecting the wills of the parties to the conflict.
Regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Wang reaffirmed China’s support for the peace plan initiated by Egypt and other Arab nations, calling for a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire, increased humanitarian aid, and reconstruction efforts in Gaza. “The Palestinians governing Palestine” must be the guiding principle for any lasting resolution, he said.
China will continue to stand for justice, peace, and development in the Middle East, he added, supporting regional countries in independently exploring their development paths and achieving peace and revitalization.
Standing with the Global South
Wang hailed the Global South as a key force for maintaining world peace, driving development, and improving governance, pledging that “no matter how the world changes, our heart will always be with the Global South.”
He reaffirmed China’s commitment to Africa’s self-reliance and self-strengthening, calling on the international community to support the continent’s independent development. On Latin American and Caribbean countries, Wang stressed that China’s cooperation is based on mutual support, not geopolitical calculations, and that China “never seeks sphere of influence or targets any party.”
As the world faces growing instability and shifting power dynamics, Wang emphasized that China will continue to serve as an anchor of stability, promoting peace, development, and cooperation for all nations.
