NEW YORK, January 25, 2025 (WSH) — The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has successfully completed the second phase of a series of release operations, reuniting families across Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank, according to an ICRC press release.

These operations are part of an agreement reached by the involved parties and represent a significant humanitarian effort amidst ongoing tensions in the region.

Four Hostages Transferred from Gaza

The operation began with the safe transfer of four hostages from Gaza to Israeli authorities. The ICRC emphasized its unwavering commitment to ensuring the secure and dignified transfer of individuals held hostage. “This is a responsibility we take extremely seriously,” the organization stated.

Release of 200 Detainees

In addition to the hostage transfer, the ICRC facilitated the release of 128 detainees from Israeli detention centers to Gaza and the West Bank. Another 72 detainees were released in a separate operation organized by the authorities. Pre-departure interviews were conducted by ICRC teams to confirm identities, assess health conditions, and ensure fitness for travel.

“Our activities are consistent with ICRC’s global standard procedures in places of detention,” said the organization, highlighting its neutral and humanitarian role in such operations.

Coordinated Operations with Safety at the Core

The ICRC worked closely with all parties to ensure the safety and efficiency of the operation. Strict security measures were taken to minimize risks, while the logistics, including timing, location, and procedures, were determined by the involved parties. Specialized ICRC staff, including medical professionals, were present to provide immediate care as needed.

“The safety and dignity of those entrusted in our care remain our top priorities,” the ICRC stated, stressing the importance of ongoing dialogue with the parties to create conducive conditions for such operations.

Bringing Aid to Gaza

Beyond the release operations, the ICRC continues to collaborate with partners within the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. This includes essential food supplies, medical equipment, and items critical for maintaining water, wastewater, and power systems.

Looking Ahead: Continued Humanitarian Efforts

The ICRC has called on all parties to adhere to their commitments to ensure future operations can proceed safely. The organization stands ready to facilitate additional release operations and to support families across the region in reuniting.

“We remain committed to delivering critical humanitarian assistance and seeing more families reunited across Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory,” the ICRC affirmed.

Editor’s Note:
To respect the dignity and safety of those released, the ICRC will not provide footage of hostages or detainees during these operations.
