BEIJING, April 5 (WSH)  — Guided by the spring breeze and led by the power of art, the Zhang Baorui Exhibition of Chinese Historical Figures officially opened on April 5 at Dadian Art Space in Beijing’s 798 Art District and will run until May 5.

Each grand and vivid portrait traverses a thousand years of history, radiating a timeless brilliance at the intersection of the ancient and the modern.

Zhang, born in 1952, is a celebrated artist, writer, senior journalist at Xinhua News Agency, member of the China Writers Association, former Editor-in-Chief of Xinhua’s Beijing Bureau, and Chairman of the Golden Rose Cultural Salon.

As the pioneer of contemporary Chinese suspense literature, his handwritten novels such as An Embroidered Shoe, The Green Corpse, and Dream of Fallen Flowers swept the country, establishing a literary kingdom uniquely his own.

To date he has published 34 novels produced five popular TV series and three films each leaving a sharp and distinctive cultural mark

Yet literature did not confine his creative spirit. To ward off evil and channel righteousness, Zhang Baorui, inspired by the figure of Zhong Kui (the ghost vanquisher), created thousands of dynamic paintings of the legendary figure. With a poet’s heart, he also portrayed historical giants like Bodhidharma, Li Bai, Su Dongpo, Confucius, and Laozi. From majestic landscapes to delicate flora and fauna, every stroke reflects a profound reverence for life and culture.

His works have been collected by leaders and cultural luminaries both at home and abroad and are inscribed at cultural landmarks such as the Wugong Temple in Haikou and the Chaoyang Zen Temple in Beijing.

In recent years, Zhang has embraced an even grander mission: to wield his brush as a sword and color as his steed, dedicating himself to creating over a thousand portraits of outstanding figures in Chinese history. Through each careful stroke, he seeks to immortalize the heroes who shaped the destiny of the Chinese nation and to awaken the spirit of perseverance and national pride in future generations.

At the exhibition’s opening ceremony, nearly a hundred distinguished guests gathered to witness this cultural event, including Li Dongcai, President of the China Theatre Association and renowned calligrapher; Ma Shuchao, famous performing artist and former head of the Beijing Film Actor Troupe, as well as writers Dou Xinping, Mu Qing, May Wind, and others. The venue was filled with applause, as vivid paintings bridged past and present, creating a powerful moment of cultural resonance.

The exhibition is held at Dadian Art Space, located in the 798 Art District of Chaoyang District, Beijing (290 meters southeast of the intersection of Caihong Road and Jiuxianqiao North Road), and will run until May 5.

Entering the gallery is like stepping through centuries of splendor — every portrait murmurs its story, every figure gazes into the soul, calling on visitors to remember their roots and forge ahead.

With art bearing the way and ink conveying the spirit, Zhang has, with his dedication and talent, painted a magnificent epic belonging to the Chinese nation. This spring, let us walk into 798, encounter the towering figures brought to life by Zhang’s brush, and listen to their timeless call across the ages.
