The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted routine immunization efforts around the world, leading to a significant number of children missing out on essential vaccinations.
UNICEF’s State of the World’s Children 2023 report has highlighted this issue, revealing that 67 million children missed out on one or more essential vaccinations between 2019 and 2021. This is the largest sustained backslide in childhood immunization in 30 years, with vaccination coverage levels decreasing in 112 countries during the pandemic.
One of the factors contributing to this decline in childhood immunization is the rise in misleading information on vaccines. UNICEF warns that the public perception of the importance of vaccines for children has declined during the pandemic in 52 out of 55 countries studied. The agency also notes a trend of declining confidence in childhood vaccines of up to 44 percentage points in some countries.
This decline in confidence in vaccines is a worrying trend, as routine immunizations and strong health systems are our best shot at preventing future pandemics, unnecessary deaths and suffering. UNICEF is calling on governments to urgently unlock resources so that they can accelerate catch-up vaccination efforts, rebuild lost confidence in vaccines, and strengthen the resilience of health systems. This includes supporting female health workers and local vaccine manufacturing, as well as investing in sustainable systems for every child.
