From January 4-5, intense Israeli bombardments across the Gaza Strip resulted in significant Palestinian casualties and damage, with continued rocket fire from Palestinian armed groups into Israel. The Ministry of Health in Gaza reported 162 Palestinian deaths and 296 injuries in this period, contributing to a total of 22,600 Palestinian deaths since October 7. Approximately 70% of these casualties are women and children, and 57,910 Palestinians have been injured.
No additional Israeli military fatalities were reported in Gaza as of January 5; since the ground operation began, 173 Israeli soldiers have been killed and 1,020 injured.
UNICEF highlighted severe malnutrition among children under two years old in Gaza, with 90% consuming insufficient food groups, leading to fears of famine. Diarrhea cases among children under five have surged, exacerbating health concerns.
As of January 5, the World Food Programme is assisting with food distribution in Gaza, focusing on bread production due to its essential nutritional value and practicality. Overcrowding and sanitation issues, particularly in Jabalya Refugee Camp, are causing severe health risks.
The United Nations has emphasized the dire humanitarian situation, with over 2 million people in Gaza needing support amidst the ongoing conflict. In the West Bank, Israeli actions have resulted in numerous Palestinian casualties and displacements.
The international community has provided $637.6 million of the $1.2 billion requested in a UN Flash Appeal to support those affected in Gaza and the West Bank.
