BEIJING, August 20 (WSH) — Renowned singer Chyi Baibai (real name Zhong Lanrui) passed away in the early hours of August 19 due to illness, at the age of 62.

The news was confirmed by her longtime friend Huang An on social media. Notably, Chyi had been scheduled to perform at the “Classic Golden Hits Carnival” at Shanxi University of Technology from August 23 to 24.

Musical Journey

Born in Hsinchu, Taiwan in 1963, Chyi discovered her passion for music while working in a restaurant during high school. In 1982, she made her debut with the song Silky Rain Alley, which highlighted her distinctive voice. She rose to fame in 1986 with the hit album When I Miss You, featuring classics such as When I Miss You and Walking Through the Café. In 1988, her performance of When I Miss You on a CCTV special introduced her to audiences in mainland China.

By the early 1990s, Chyi was performing at major events including the Beijing Asian Games gala concerts. After marrying musician Gao Dalin in 1994, she stepped back from the spotlight, later appearing in the TV drama New Butterfly Lovers. She returned in 2003 with new albums, including Believe in Yourself and Women, Don’t Be Too Foolish.

Legacy and Impact

Best known for her timeless hits such as Walking Through the Café, When I Miss You, and Misty Rain, Chyi’s songs once swept across Taiwan, mainland China, and Southeast Asia. She revealed in 2021 that she had settled in Chengdu, and as recently as 2024, she performed at the “Top Golden Hits” music gala.

Huang An, recalling their friendship since high school, described her as “a kind-hearted soul with no malice,” adding: “She left us too soon. Her passing reminds us to cherish life and live with purpose.”

Chyi Baibai’s passing has prompted widespread mourning among fans and the music industry.
