VATICAN, May 8 (WSH) — UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday welcomed the election of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, calling it a moment of deep spiritual meaning at a time of growing global uncertainty.

Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, is the first American-born Pope in history. He also holds Peruvian citizenship after years of missionary work in Latin America. His election followed a conclave of cardinals at the Vatican, where he addressed thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square with a message of peace and unity.

Call for Moral Leadership

“The election of a new Pope is a moment of profound spiritual significance for millions of faithful around the world, and it comes at a time of great global challenges,” Guterres said in a statement.

“Our world is in urgent need of strong voices for peace, social justice, human dignity, and compassion.”

A Legacy of Partnership

The UN Secretary-General expressed his intent to strengthen cooperation with the Holy See, building on the legacy of Pope Francis, who passed away in April after twelve years as pontiff.

“I look forward to continuing our collaboration to advance solidarity, foster reconciliation, and build a more just and sustainable world for all,” Guterres said.

He added that Pope Leo’s first words as pontiff captured a shared human aspiration: “May peace be with all the world.”

From Missionary to Pontiff

Pope Leo, 69, began his religious career in the United States before serving in Peru, eventually becoming head of the international Order of St. Augustine. He was appointed cardinal in 2023 and went on to lead the Vatican office responsible for the selection and oversight of Catholic bishops worldwide.

He succeeds Pope Francis, the first Latin American Pope, who was widely admired as a moral voice for the marginalized and a champion of peace and justice.

Guterres praised his legacy, calling him “a transcendent voice for peace, human dignity and social justice,” and “a servant of compassion and faith, especially for those most in need.”
