The Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations commemorated the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers with a special photographic exhibition titled, “Tribute to Fallen Peacekeepers & Pakistan’s proactive engagement and constructive contributions to UN peacekeeping.”

The exhibition, which took place from June 1st to June 9th at the Vienna Cafe in the United Nations Headquarters, culminated in a reception hosted by the Pakistan Mission. The event attracted a diverse audience, including ambassadors, diplomats, military officials, UN representatives, and others.

In his welcoming address, Ambassador Munir Akram, the Permanent Representative of the Pakistan Mission, expressed his utmost respect for all UN peacekeepers and personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of the UN. He emphasized the significance of honoring their dedication and bravery.

Ambassador Akram also acknowledged the history of UN peacekeeping, highlighting that 171 peacekeepers have tragically lost their lives in the pursuit of international peace and security. He specifically mentioned the eight Pakistani peacekeepers who recently lost their lives in a helicopter crash in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, expressing condolences to their families and recognizing their selflessness.

Furthermore, Ambassador Akram commended the commitment and resilience of Pakistan’s peacekeepers in upholding the values of the UN Charter and fostering global peace and security. He praised their multidimensional efforts, ranging from protecting civilians to providing humanitarian assistance and contributing to infrastructure development. Pakistani peacekeepers have been actively involved in community engagement, including vocational training programs, healthcare services, and gender equality initiatives.

During the reception, Under Secretary General for Peace Operations Mr. Jean-Pierre Lacroix paid tribute to Fallen Peacekeepers and acknowledged Pakistan’s significant support in promoting peace and security. Military Adviser General Birame Diop and Police Advisor Faisal Shahkar also delivered remarks, underscoring the importance of international collaboration in peacekeeping efforts.

The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers was designated on May 29th by the United Nations General Assembly (Resolution 57/129), in recognition of the first UN peacekeeping mission’s establishment in Palestine in 1948. This day serves as a reminder of the dedication and sacrifice of peacekeepers worldwide.

Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to peacekeeping is exemplified by the more than 200,000 Pakistani men and women who have served in 46 UN Missions around the globe. Tragically, 171 brave individuals have laid down their lives in service to the UN flag, showcasing an unparalleled level of dedication to the principles of the UN Charter and its mission to protect the world from the horrors of war.
