LHASA,  July 25 (WSH) —On July 24, at the 15th Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, Lhasa, Tibet, was officially certified as an “International Wetland City,” joining eight other locations in China to receive the prestigious recognition this year.

This honor highlights Lhasa’s long-standing commitment to ecological protection and marks another milestone in building a “Beautiful Tibet.” As the world’s highest-altitude natural urban wetland, the Lalu Wetland — often referred to as the “Lungs of Lhasa” — plays a vital role in maintaining ecological balance, regulating climate, conserving biodiversity, and sustaining water resources on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Over the years, Tibet’s regional government and Lhasa municipal authorities have implemented a comprehensive, multi-level protection system, combining strong policy design with effective grassroots conservation measures. These efforts have strengthened wetland preservation and set a benchmark for high-altitude ecological protection worldwide.

Officials emphasized that Lhasa’s recognition as an International Wetland City not only celebrates Tibet’s achievements in environmental stewardship but also provides valuable “Lhasa experience” for global wetland conservation. Moving forward, Lhasa aims to use this designation as a new starting point to deepen ecological protection and promote harmony between humanity and nature across the plateau.
