UNITED NATIONS, February 2 (WSH) — The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) successfully transferred three hostages from Gaza to Israel on February 1, while also facilitating the release of 175 Palestinian detainees from Israeli detention centers to Gaza and the West Bank. In total, 183 individuals were freed as part of the latest exchange.

The operation marks the conclusion of the fourth phase of release efforts mediated by the ICRC over the past two weeks. Since the start of these operations, the organization has helped secure the return of 18 hostages and 583 Palestinian detainees.

Ahead of  the transfers, the ICRC reiterated to all parties their obligation to ensure that movements occur safely and with dignity. The details of each release—including the identities of those freed and the timing of the handover—were agreed upon by the parties involved in the conflict.

While the ICRC has not participated in negotiations, it has served as a neutral humanitarian intermediary, facilitating the releases to reunite families. Specialized ICRC personnel, including medical staff, have been on hand to provide immediate assistance as needed. The organization also conducts pre-departure interviews to assess detainees’ health and fitness for travel.

As families continue to await news of their loved ones, the ICRC has urged all parties to uphold the agreement and continue reunification efforts. The organization remains prepared to support further release operations in the coming weeks while also maintaining its efforts to bring life-saving humanitarian aid into Gaza.
