Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg have had a contentious relationship for several years, with Musk often criticizing Zuckerberg and his companies. Musk has accused Facebook, which owns Meta, of negatively affecting society and creating a monopoly. He has also expressed concern about the impact of artificial intelligence on society and criticized Zuckerberg’s view on the matter.

In 2020, Musk tweeted “#DeleteFacebook It’s lame,” after Facebook’s handling of the Cambridge Analytica scandal. In response, Zuckerberg reportedly told his executives to no longer promote Tesla on Facebook, according to a report by Wired.

In 2022, at a TED conference, Musk compared Zuckerberg to King Louis XIV, a French monarch who wielded vast power. He criticized Zuckerberg’s ownership of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, stating that they have too much control over people’s personal data.

Regarding WhatsApp, Musk’s recent criticism was triggered by a Twitter engineer’s tweet that WhatsApp had been using his phone’s microphone while he was asleep. Musk retweeted the post and wrote, “WhatsApp cannot be trusted.” He also stated that many people do not realize that WhatsApp founders Jan Koum and Brian Acton left the company in disgust after Facebook acquired it and that they supported the #DeleteFacebook campaign.
