China’s railway passenger traffic surged to a record 3.71 billion trips from January to October, marking a 13 percent increase over last year, according to China State Railway Group Co., Ltd.
The railway operator reported that the national network maintained smooth and safe operations throughout this period. Passenger transport capacity also rose, with an average of 10,555 trains operating daily, a 9.3 percent rise year-on-year.
Tourism received a significant boost, with 1,599 tourist trains running from January to October. These trains, which are designed to facilitate travel between major cities and key attractions, support China’s growing tourism and silver economy sectors.
Cross-border travel experienced similar growth. The Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed railway carried nearly 22.5 million passengers, up 39.5 percent year-on-year, while the China-Laos Railway handled 217,000 cross-border trips during the same period.
An official from China State Railway Group noted plans to closely monitor demand, optimize train schedules, and improve service quality to enhance the passenger experience.
China’s railway construction efforts have continued at full speed. From January to October, fixed-asset investment in the sector reached 635.1 billion yuan (approximately 88.2 billion U.S. dollars), a 10.9 percent increase from last year. China’s total railway network now spans over 160,000 kilometers, with 46,000 kilometers dedicated to high-speed lines.
