Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang emphasized China’s steadfast commitment to combating climate change in a meeting with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The discussion took place on the sidelines of the World Leaders Climate Action Summit at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Representing Chinese President Xi Jinping, Ding underscored China’s dedication to green and low-carbon development as central to its national strategy for high-quality growth. “China’s goal to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 is a carefully considered commitment,” Ding noted, adding that China backs its climate goals with concrete actions, regardless of shifts in the global landscape or policies elsewhere.
Ding highlighted China’s role in supporting multilateralism, positioning the United Nations as central to global climate governance and pledging China’s continued contributions to the international climate agenda. He expressed China’s willingness to work collaboratively with global partners, promoting practical dialogue and opposing unilateral approaches to tackle the climate crisis.
Secretary-General Guterres commended China’s active role and support for the United Nations’ climate objectives, reaffirming the UN’s commitment to deepen cooperation with China in pursuit of a successful COP29 outcome and enhanced global climate resilience.
