NEW YORK, January 27 (WSH) — The pervasive antisemitism that fueled the Holocaust continues to threaten global stability and Western civilization, said World Jewish Congress (WJC) President Ronald S. Lauder at the solemn commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Lauder: Antisemitism Undermines Western Values

Speaking at the former Nazi concentration and death camp, Ambassador Lauder drew a direct line between the hatred that led to Auschwitz and contemporary antisemitic violence, including the October 2023 terror attacks on Israel.

“Antisemitism had its willing supporters then, and it has them now,” Lauder stated, emphasizing that indifference among non-Jews allowed such hatred to thrive. He warned that antisemitic acts are not isolated attacks on Jewish communities but also on the Judeo-Christian values underpinning Western civilization.

Event Honors Survivors and Victims

Joined by four Auschwitz survivors and Dr. Piotr Cywiński, director of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Museum, Lauder addressed an audience of over 50 national representatives. The ceremony honored the memory of Holocaust victims, underscored the importance of Holocaust education, and reaffirmed a commitment to combating rising antisemitism.

The WJC delegation included organizational leaders, Jewish community heads, and Holocaust survivors, brought together by the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Foundation and its Auschwitz 80 Committee.

#WeRemember Campaign and Global Tributes

To mark the anniversary, the WJC launched its annual #WeRemember campaign, aiming to combat Holocaust denial and distortion. This year’s campaign featured global participation, with landmarks such as the European Commission headquarters in Brussels, Berlin’s Bundestag, Israel’s Knesset, and iconic sites in Switzerland, Greece, and the Czech Republic illuminated with the #WeRemember message. These tributes symbolized solidarity against antisemitism and commitment to preserving Holocaust memory.

Expanding Holocaust Education with UNESCO and TikTok

As part of its efforts, the WJC expanded its partnership with UNESCO and TikTok to connect millions with verified educational resources. More than 4 million social media users visited aboutholocaust.org in 2024, ensuring younger generations access accurate Holocaust education. The campaign also addressed Holocaust distortion and misinformation, urging social media platforms to amplify verified resources.

SECCA Forum Tackles Antisemitism with Technology

The WJC’s Special Envoys & Coordinators Combating Antisemitism (SECCA) Forum will convene in Krakow on January 28 to explore how emerging technologies can combat antisemitism and Holocaust distortion. The forum includes discussions with tech leaders from Meta, TikTok, and X on topics such as automated hate speech detection, post-October 7 content evolution, and the role of Generative AI in addressing online hate.

Lauder’s Call to Action

“Antisemitism is not just a Jewish issue—it is a global issue,” Lauder concluded. He urged governments, communities, and individuals to confront hatred wherever it emerges, reaffirming that vigilance and education are essential to preventing history from repeating itself.
